Amazon Recruiting in Nashville

Last rainy Wednesday, I attended Amazon’s recruiting fair in Nashville at the Ryman. As you may or may not know, Amazon is opening a mini headquarters in Nashville, not the main 2nd headquarters, but enough to employ 5,000 jobs. It’s the largest job announcement for Nashville ever.

So, what does one of the top companies in the world, and the U.S., do to hype it up as a top employer in Nashville? It begins by hosting an invitation-only event at the historic Ryman Auditorium. I honestly wasn’t quite sure of the companies’ purpose when the event was announced. However, it became apparent fairly quickly that the purpose was to recruit college students and mid-level career employees. Several top executives answered questions about why their jobs were the coolest, specifically in areas of transportation, fulfillment, supply chain management, and some IT functions. They are hiring the BEST people.

Lots of hype and appeal to college students. I signed up for an invitation through an online news article. But someone at Amazon was smart enough to specifically ensure that local colleges and universities bring college students to attend the event. There were hundreds of  students dodging the rain and tornado watches while trying to grab some food.  I know because as the tornado watch expired, the announcers called for the arrival of about 10 different universities’ buses departing.

The “Amazon is coming to Nashville” kick off event was hyped and full of energy as they attempt to recruit the best people to their company and fill jobs. Other companies suffering from high turnover and employee dissatisfaction should take note on how to attract the best employees- have executives talk about their experiences, hype up the cool factors of the jobs, pay well to attract and retain talent, and bribe with some free food and goodies.

What does this event mean? Well, if you are located in Nashville and have a college degree, you may want to apply for a corporate job here. The average salary is over $100,000. Big bucks! And big time career opportunities from working at the top supply chain and retail company in the world!
